В монографии на основе полевых, архивных и литературных источников раскрывается процесс формирования и развития культуры олхонских бурят во взаимодействии и взаимообусловленности ее основополагающих сфер – сакральной и профанной. Изучение на бурятском материале традиционной культуры на протяжении всего XX в. предпринимается впервые. Ольхонские буряты рассматриваются как изолированный субэтнос, сохранивший до настоящего времени из-за отсутствия земледелия и поверхностного распространения здесь ламаизма и православия многие архаические черты материальной и духовной культуры. Ольхон также является сакральным центром народа.

The book studies the process of formation and development of the culture of the Ol’hon Buryats as a result of the interaction and interdependence of the two of its fundamental spheres that is the profane and sacral ones. The study of the problem based on the use of the Buryat material of the traditional culture throughout the XX century has been undertaken for the first time. The Ol’hon Buryats present a surepethnos inhabiting the shore and the island on the Baikal, which is the most ancient deepest lake in the world. This island is the geographic centre of ethnic territory of the Buryats.
