The study focuses on the policy of the great powers pursuing their own interests in Mongolia. Along with Mongolia's geographical neighbors, Russia and China, special attention is paid to the so-called "third neighbor", represented mainly by Western countries and their Asian allies.

This collection includes articles of the participants of the International conference “Languages in a polyethnic state: development, planning and prospects”, organized in collaboration by Institute for Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of Siberian Branch of RAS and Institute for Slavic Studies Justus Liebig University Giessen, the Giessen Centre for Eastern European Studies (GiZo) from 01 July–04 July, 2019 in Ulan-Ude with financial support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The problems touched upon by the authors include a wide range of questions which are bound up with language and society interaction, functioning of ethnic languages in modern conditions, analyses of concrete language situations, language policy, language legislation and language conflicts in Russia and other countries.
