Словарь является первым опытом этимологического словаря корневых (неразложимых) слов монгольских языков в мировом монголоведении. Г.Д. Санжеев считал главной задачей монгольской лексикологии выяснение морфемной членимости слов, ставших в настоящее время неразложимыми. Такой подход позволит лингвистам-компаративистам сопоставлять монгольские слова с соответствующими словами других языков алтайской семьи на более надежном основании. Привлечены данные не только монгольских, но и древних тюркских, тунгусо-маньчжурских и ряда других языков. Достаточное место в Словаре отводится монгольским тюркизмам и установлению основных закономерностей их фонетической и морфологической субституций.

The dictionary is the first experience of etymological dictionary of root (indivisible) words of Mongolian languages in the world Mongolian Studies. G.D. Sanzheev thought that the main task of the Mongolian lexicology is research of morphemic devidedness of words which are indivisible now. This approach allows linguists matching Mongolian words with corresponding words in other languages of Altaic family. Data not only Mongolian, but ancient Turkic, Manchu-Tungus and some other languages are attracted. Much attention is paid to Mongolian turcisms and the revealing of the basic laws of their phonetic and morphological substitutions.
